Bryn pulled Shiina into a deserted, abandoned shop in the alley. A ghost glared at them and floated outside. Bryn turned Shiina around and looked straight at her. "Who was it?"
Shiina looked down. "I'm not sure. But I'm sure that he was coming for us. He was in a hooded cloak, gliding towards us. So I looked into his future and-" Shiina broke off and began to cough.
Bryn waved her wand and Shiina stopped coughing. "Tergeo." Any blood or mucus that was making her cough disappeared again. "What did you see, Masumoto?" When she didn't reply, Bryn's voice became more urgent. "What did you see?!" She didn't know why it was so important to her- it just was.
Bryn paused, deep in thought. "Well, we have a couple options. One, we risk our lives and find out who he is. Two, we stay safe and figure it out in the library. All I know is that we have to find out who he was." Bryn looked determined, her lips pressed into a thin line and her eyes dark. "Shiina," she said suddenly, "Why do you cough like that?" When Shiina didn't answer, Bryn's eyes widened. "It's a potino, isn't it?"
"My coughing is the result of having the Inner Eye. When I was small, I could not control my powers and wasted it constantly. And it's left me like this." Shiina sat down and looked up.
"Then that means unless you get rid of your Inner Eye, you will have that cough for eternity, until you die. For all I know, it might be the cause of your death." Bryn examined Shiina's face carefully for any signs.
"Don't call me Bryn Reedwing, Masumoto," Bryn snapped, her use of the other girl's last name showing her irritation. "I don't call you Shiina Masumoto, do I?"
After a while, Shiina stood up. "I don't think it's safe for us here. We should leave immediately." She looked down at Bryn and whispered softly, "Now."
Bryn sighed. "I guess we can think about this later; we have other more important matters at hand. So should we look for him or go to the library?" She asked Shiina.
"It depends. If we look for him, we should disguise ourselves. But we don't know who he is, so that might be dangerous. But looking in the library might not be of help, as we only know about the clothes that he wears," Shiina reasoned.
Bryn nodded. "I think we should risk it. Here, I'll help with the charms." She carved out Shiina's face so that it looked like a 40 year old woman with a large mole on her lip. She was now wearing a brown travelling cloak. Her hair was a dirt-like brown, and her eyes were of the same color. Bryn looked the same, except a little younger, with darker eyes, and lighter hair. She wore a black travelling cloak instead. "Now we can be poor sisters from another town," Bryn explained to Shiina.
Shiina stared down at her appearance. After a couple seconds, she said "Bryn, if I fall, don't mind me." Her gaze became serious. "There's no need to bother."
She stopped her working. One of her eyes were amber while the other was dark brown. "No, Shiina," she said softly. "We're in this together." Bryn stayed silent until after she had finished transforming herself.
A man stepped out from the shadows, smiling. His amber eyes were cold and mocking. His dark brown hair was shaggy, and would have covered his eyes if he hadn't brushed it away from it. "Hello, little seer," he smiled. His eyes fell on Bryn. "And the one who I came for."
Shiina quickly conjured a sword and pressed its tip to the man's neck. "You are not wanted here. Get out!" she said firmly, in an intimidating tone. "I didn't expect to see you here, though." She paused and coughed once. "But I must warn you that before I came to Lyreade I was an elite assassin in my parents' clan."
The man laughed, and with a twitch of his wand disintegrated the sword. With another twitch of his wand, Shiina's wand was in his hand. "I won't hurt you if you don't try anything," he smiled. "Protective of her, are you? Good," he smiled. "I'm glad to know that at least someone cares for her."
The man shook his head, looking down at the girl. "Or do YOU need her?" Bryn stared up at the man. "Father?" He smiled again. "Yes, Bronwyn. I'm Daniel Papyrus, your father. You thought by changing your name you would lose me, but I still found you, did I?" Her eyes narrowed. "Don't call me Bronwyn, and you're not my father. And I won't let you hurt Shiina, or go with you."
Bryn glared at her father one more time. "Don't bother me, Daniel. And don't try to follow me either. I don't care if you want to reconcile our memories, or sacrifice me to the Mayans, I'm not going to do anything you say." With that, she grabbed Shiina by the arms and apparated to the Lyreade grounds. To her surprise, her father did not follow them. He stood there and stared at the spot where they just were.
Shiina and Bryn rushed into the alley.

ReplyDelete"He....was going to kill us," Shiina rasped.
ReplyDeleteBryn narrowed her eyes. "Could you sense who he was?"
ReplyDelete"No," Shiina whispered. "But if he comes near us again I'll know."

ReplyDelete*Potion
ReplyDeleteShiina looked away, slightly uncomfortable. "It's the price."
ReplyDeleteBryn sighed, sliding back against the wall. "Are you drinking it just so you can access your Inner Eye?"
ReplyDelete"It was supposed to be a healing potion," Shiina muttered.
ReplyDelete"My coughing is the result of having the Inner Eye. When I was small, I could not control my powers and wasted it constantly. And it's left me like this." Shiina sat down and looked up.

ReplyDeleteShiina wiped a small tear from her face in surprise. Never, ever, in her life had she cried before. Why could she shed her tears now and not before?
ReplyDeleteBryn pretended not to notice Shiina's tear. "Come on. Let's go find that man," she stood up and waited for Shiina.
ReplyDeleteShiina stood up, looking wantonly but determined.
ReplyDelete"Do you still sense him?" Inquired Bryn.
ReplyDeleteShiina closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating. Then she opened them, and slowly turned around. "Why are you here?" she demanded.

ReplyDeleteShiina glared at the mysterious man. She stared at the sword for a while, and it disintegrated. Then she looked up. "What do you want?"
ReplyDelete"I want my daughter." His smile faded, to be replaced by an unreadable expression.
ReplyDeleteShiina closed her eyes for a second. "I won't let you have her. The school needs her."
ReplyDeleteThe man shook his head, looking down at the girl. "Or do YOU need her?"
