This is held outside, where the stables and cages are, near the Forest of the Unknown. The classes are usually held in a large clearing at the edge of the Forest, but that may change depending on the creature the class is studying at that time. John Smith of Wyvernlor teaches this class.
Prof. Smith walked into the stables and stroked the hippogriffs, anticipating the class of students that were soon to come.
ReplyDeleteBryn walked in with Devin running up behind her. She ignored him and continued walking. "Hello, Prof. Smith!" She called, indiscreetly kicking Devin behind her.
ReplyDeleteProf. Smith turned to look at the students. Abruptly, Shiina walked into the classroom. Seeing all of the students, he started the class. "Today we will study rambino animals. We will start by studying the ranbino beetles, and end this lesson with rambino unicorns. Rambino animals change color according to the person closest to them's mood. For example, if you are angry, they will turn red. Here are some beetles for you to observe. Please take notes on them. You will need these notes for your homework tonight. Shiina, having no fear of creatures, delicately picked up a beetle. Almost instantly, the beetle turned pitch black. She stared at it for a few more seconds, and picked up her quill and began to write.
ReplyDeleteShiina stared at the beetle for a little while longer after she seemed to finish her notes. On her face was not her usual glare, but a sad look, a face so drenched with melancholy and loneliness, that the beetle looked back up. Upon seeing her face, he immediately dried up and died. Shiina put the beetle back down on her desk, glaring again before anybody could notice her. But she couldn't help but feel as though some one was watching her....
ReplyDeleteBryn looked down, and picked up a beetle as well. She watched it turn silver, then purple, then black, then silver, then purple, then black... Bryn held it for a minute longer, studying it, then placed it back down and wrote something in her notebook.
ReplyDeleteGwen secretly pulled out her wand and pointed it at a beetle, murmuring, "Excelsiosempra," and watched it fly up into the air, all the while shifting from white to black to green to red to brown to a sickly yellow. It landed with a light thud, and Gwen wrote something in her notebook as well.
Devin picked it up as well, turning it over, watching it turn dark green. He placed it back down, walked about three meters away, and saw it turn into a dark brown once more. He wrote it down in his notebook.
Prof. Smith couldn't help but notice Shiina's melancholy. He glanced at her, and didn't see a glaring face. All he saw was a lost girl, desperate for friends and maybe something else? He decided to move the class on. "OK, class, now we will go outside to the stables to look at the unicorns." He led them outside. "Unfortunately, we only have two rambino unicorns in our school. Erm, Gwen and Devin, you two pair up. Bryn and Shiina, you two will be in a group. Oh, but Bryn, please come over for a second."
ReplyDeleteBryn narrowed her eyes. Team up with the head of her rival house? Yeah, that'll go well. She marched up to her teacher, and glared at him. "What?" She snapped, amber eyes fiery.
ReplyDeleteGwen glared at Devin but walked over to work with him.
"I need you to befriend Shiina. I know it sounds crazy, but you don't have to be in different houses to be friends. I think she's somewhere in her hear where she can't laugh or smile. I think she's lonely. Please, at least be friendly to her." They both glanced at Shiina, and Bryn realized for the first time how sad she looked. "Now go."
ReplyDeleteBryn didn't feel sympathetic. What? She'd never had parents or friends or anybody who cared. Why should she start how? "Why should I?" She growled, glowering at her teacher through narrowed eyes.
ReplyDeleteProf. Smith kept a placid face. "Just go. Do what you want." Then he raised his voice. "OK, class! We will now study these creatures. Please don't do any harm to them. Take some more notes and I'll tell you your assignment when you're done."
ReplyDeleteWith a final glare to the professor, Bryn stomped off to find Shiina. "Hi," she muttered at her fellow House Head. She glared at the unicorns for being so innocent, then scribbled something in her notebook.
ReplyDeleteWhen she approached the unicorn, it instantly turned from Shiina's black to a flaming scarlet red.
ReplyDeleteShiina was silently stroking the unicorn, which had already turned black in Bryn's absence. "Seems like we're done," she said, in a whispy voice. "OK, class tonight's assignment is to put all your notes into a page long essay about these animals that you studied today! Class is dismissed." And with that announcement, everyone left.
ReplyDeleteBryn snorted in annoyance, closed her notebook with a loud "whump", then stormed out of the clearing and to the Courtyard.
ReplyDeletePollux was excited for his Care for Magical Creatures class. He hopped up the grand staircase of the school and stepped into the classroom.
ReplyDeletePollux couldnt' help wondering where everyone was. He stared at the still empty classroom, no teacher, no other students...
ReplyDeleteLeon followed Pollux, unable to share his enthusiasm for the class. Just then, Prof. Smith clapped his hands. "OK, class! Today we will study the hippogriff! Everyone, please turn your books to page 134 and read it while I draw diagrams in the dirt.
ReplyDeletePollux flipped open his textbook to page 134. It had pictures of hippogriffs eating and flying. He read the text, and couldn't help thinking of his pet hippogriff back home. He looked at Leon. "Are you done?"
ReplyDeleteLeon was looking in horror at the page. He didn't appear to hear Pollux. Prof. Smith kneeled next to him. "Leon, whats wrong?" He looked up at Pollox. "Does this happen often?"
ReplyDeletePollux stared at Leon. "What do you mean?"
ReplyDeleteProf. Smith glanced down at Pollux. Just then, Leon came back to his senses. He looked around. Then he saw Prof. Smith. "I-I'm so sorry, Professor Smith! I seemed to have gone into a trance!" Professor Smith smiled slightly. "That's OK. Now, students, what did you lear from that page?"
ReplyDeletePollux's hand shot up.
ReplyDelete"Never insult a hippogriff because they are really proud, and are strong enough to kill you."
Pollux smiled. He remembered how his hippogriff, Lucy, rear up on her hind legs and flap her wings whenever Pollux's parents would get mad at her.
"Right," Professor Smith said. "Now, look at these diagrams together and try to tell what they are," he continued. Abruptly, Professor Yamamoto walked towards them. "Excuse me for a second," Professor Smith apologized to the two students.
ReplyDeletePollux stared intently at the diagrams. He instantly knew what it was.
ReplyDelete"The footprints of different types of hippogriff!"
Leon nodded in agreement. Professor Smith came jogging back to them. OK, you two seem bright enough. Would you like to go see the hippogriff now?"
ReplyDeletePollux's eyes instantly morphed into a bright red. "YES!" He hurried after Professor Smith, who had already started walking towards the paddock, where the hippogriff herd is kept.
ReplyDeleteLeon padded behind Pollux. They walked towards the paddock and entered. "OK, you two. You must observe the hippogriff and write a page long essay on them tonight, OK? So observe closely! I'll be back in 10 minutes," Professor Smith explained.
ReplyDelete"OK." Pollux replied. He perused the hippogriff intently. It gracefully pranced across the field and leapt into the air, snatching a fleeing magpie. Then it landed smoothly with its front legs and made its way back to the herd. Pollux looked into his notebook and started taking notes.
ReplyDeleteLeon followed suit, and ten minutes later.....
ReplyDelete"OK! Class is dismissed! Remember to write your essays!" Professor Smith called from the clearing as the two students walked away.
Pollux looked at Leon as they walked back to the school building. "Why did Professor Smith leave?
ReplyDeletePollux felt ignored. He went back into his room.
ReplyDeleteLeon stared stupidly at Pollux, but went to the library to read more.
